Field Trip to Nursing Home

As part of the Geriatric Care course, nursing students visited Dar al-Masaneen Elderly Home in Sitak, Sulaimaniyah, to enhance their understanding of elder care and use geriatric assessment tools in a clinical setting. During the visit, students assessed residents with the Katz ADL, MMSE, GDS, and Morse Fall Risk Scale. They found varying levels of independence, with many needing help with daily activities, mild to moderate cognitive decline, signs of depression due to social isolation, and increased fall risks. The students noted staff dedication, the prevalence of chronic diseases, and the need for more mobility aids, physiotherapy, and recreational activities. This visit enriched their communication skills and understanding of holistic geriatric care, reinforcing the department’s commitment to practical learning for future nurses.
